Description
Nannyberry is our tallest growing viburnum, growing as high as 15 feet or so. Like all of our viburnums, it forms compact colonies of many stems over time. The oval shaped dark purple fruit are relished by birds in the early autumn; I have seen times when blue jays are squawking madly at one another as they vie for the precious fruit. Other times the fruit will hand on the stem through out the winter, only to disappear one day. Nannyberry can often be found growing in good loamy soils at the edges of fields, trails, and roadsides where it is usually shaded for part of the day. Even though it appreciates moisture retentive soil, it is usually not associated with wet areas. This viburnum is called nannyberry because it is a preferred food source of sheep and goats, when available.
