Description
Spotted Joe Pye is the “mac-daddy” of the Joe Pye’s, routinely growing in excess of 6 feet. When planted en masse it creates a stunning, larger-than-life effect. Large frisbee sized magenta flower clusters attract lots of pollinators including the big showy butterflies we all love to have around, bumblebees, wasps, and moths. Likes full sun to part shade, grows in wet open meadows, and also in drier areas. Tolerates a variety of moisture regimes in cultivation, drier soils may keep it a bit shorter. Spotted Joe Pye is the larval host plant for dozens of species of butterflies including Azures, Silver spotted skipper butterflies, and the White Admiral. The naming of this plant has a really interesting, albeit murky history. Some of the stories say that Joe Pye was a travelling medicine man of the early American colonial days who used Eutrochium as a cure-all for the diseases of the day.
