Description
Yes, Sassafras! Often requested but hardly ever available, we now have several nice specimen plants.
Sassafras has long been coveted for its distinctive oils that can be distilled from its roots; safrole is the chemical responsible for that delicious one of a kind smell. It does grow naturally in Maine, but tends to stay in southern York County where it is growing here and there along roads and in thickets. The species is colony forming, so one plant will eventually give rise to new shoots over time. The mitten shaped leaves are what usually catches my attention, as each one seems to be a little different. Here’s a fun fact; sassafras is in the same family (Lauraceae) as spicebush and avocados!
7 gallon pot size, multi-stemmed, 2-3ft tall
