Description

I guess I have always taken for granted how many showy species of wildflowers we have in North America, particularly in the aster family. Plants like Rudbeckia, Echinacea, and Liatris that are featured in perennial gardens all over the world. The Blazing Stars are particularly well loved for their versatility, stunning columns of bright purple flowers, and ease of propagation. This genus is found only in North America, so far as I can tell, and is comprised of about 30 different species. In the wild, Dense Blazing Star is typically associated in wet meadows and other moist open habitats, but you would never know that because we always plant it in upland  garden soils. This goes to show just how flexible so many of our native perennials truly are. Flowers from July through September, not necessarily continuously. Not native to New England, but comes close in New York, this is primarily a species of the midwest.
