Description
Folks are always asking about native ground covers, and this one is one of the best for shady spots with loamy fairly rich soils. In the wild, this plant is often growing on the edge of and in forested wetlands and wet areas. Ever-searching stolons thread through the soil and cover ground at a good clip; several feet a year in some cases. Spikes of foamy flowers are produced in early spring, leaves are semi evergreen, and are accented by highlights of purple. Many many varieties have been selected from this species, and these can be found on most every garden center shelf. In fact, it’s much harder to find non-varietal wild type plants, but we got ’em for you!
Foam flower is an important larval host plant for a number of butterflies including that harbinger of spring the Mourning Cloak, Eastern commas, Question Marks, and Exclamation Points (just kidding on the last one).
