Description
The common name conjures up quite an image doesn’t it, a hairy beardtongue? Thankfully the actual plant is much more beautiful than the site of a man’s beard resembling a hairy tongue (the other common name is northeastern beardtongue, which I have omitted because its not as colorful as hairy beardtongue!). Enough with the kidding, for this plant is nothing to joke around about. The hairy leaves make for a stunning textural addition to the pollinator garden, especially in the morning when the dew is holding tight to the leaves. Shorter in height than Foxglove beardtongue, grows in similar conditions. This is native to most of New England, including Maine, and can be found growing in fields, woodlands, outcrops, typically in dry well drained soils. It blooms a few weeks earlier than foxglove beardtongue. The deep tubular corolla attracts many pollinators including bumble and other native bees and hummingbirds.
