Description
- This is a species that is confined to southern Maine. It’s a lot shorter then spotted Joe Pye, getting about waist high instead of way-over-the-head-high. In the wild it grows in wet fields and ditches, full sun to part shade. Excellent plant for pollinators. Despite its wetland preference in the wild, this species does well in upland garden situations.
This past summer I went out at night to see what might be happening with moth pollinators. I was a little surprised to see multiple species of moth feeding on Joe Pyes and Boneset! I had never read anything about this and I wondered how many people had observed the same. It goes to show how little we know about how our native plants are interacting with all kinds of pollinators, even at night.
What’s in a name? A lot, it turns out. I refuse to refer to Joe Pye as Joe Pye weed, as it is commonly referred too. This unfortunate suffix carries a lot of negative connotations. A weed is an unwanted plant right? The JP’s are incredibly important plants to many kinds of wildlife, we are doing these plants and others a disservice when we include “weed” in their name. We can make a big difference by simply omitting the weed part.
