Description
Don’t let the name fool you, the only thing “marginal” about this superb fern is the location of the sori on the pinnae. The sori, or spore bearing organs, are located on the edges, or margins of the pinnae (leaflets). The fronds of these shade loving ferns grow out in an aesthetically pleasing radial pattern. Growing to about 2 feet tall they prefer well drained upland soils, more often than not growing on, in between, and near rocks. Some folks jokingly say that they should be called “rock ferns” because of this observation. Wonderful plant for shady rock gardens.
