Description
- Small tree/large shrub that takes on a vase like appearance. Produces a flush of bright white flowers in the early spring before much else is going on. Birds feast on the red berries that come out later in the summer; attractive smooth gray bark; does best in part sun, rich loamy soils with ample moisture. This is the species that we typically see growing in and on the edges of wetlands. Grows well in upland areas of our landscapes. Plant in clusters of 3 or more to create enticing bird habitat. The name shadbush comes from the flowering time coinciding with shad runs, a species of anadromous fish (a fish that lives most of its life in the ocean, but come to freshwater to spawn) that used to run in great numbers before the damn dams were built- ruining freshwater rivers running into the oceans, causing fishery collapses. (Sorry, I digress.)
